Understanding HL Characters
Your character's information is organized into several categories, including basic Character Information, Attributes, Abilities, Skills, and Weapon Skills, to help you utilize them better. You will see these sections labeled on your Character Sheet. The first section is the Character Information, which holds the details about your character's physical characteristics and personal information, such as height, weight, name, disposition, stature, age and whether your PC is male or female. Most of the information in this section of the Character Sheet can be chosen based on your own personal preference. If you have trouble deciding on some of these, you can roll for most of them randomly. However, some of this information is determined for you based on dice rolls and/or other aspects of your character. Next are your character's Attributes, which are very important characteristics because they define your character's basic mental, physical, and spiritual qualities. They include your character's Strength, Agility, Intellect, Charisma, etc. Attributes are the foundation for other aspects and can also determine how your character will develop. Note: Holy Lands will refer to the corresponding number of an Attribute as an Attribute Value, or AV for short. You typically want higher AV's for your character because you have to roll a number on a d12 under the AV. Next are your character's Abilities, which are Bonuses calculated from your character's Attribute Values. Abilities note your character's aptitude at performing basic physical skills that every character has, such as how well they can jump, climb, or find hidden things (Search). Like Attributes, you typically want higher Ability Bonuses, but unlike Attributes, you apply the Bonus to your die roll (rolled on a d20) when your character attempts one of the Abilities, the higher the roll the better. If the roll exceeds a target number, the attempt was successful. Skills are those abilities with which your character becomes continually proficient. Skills of a PC are broken down into three categories called Gifts, Talents, and Crafts. Gifts are your character's strongest Skills because they begin at a higher proficiency level and progress the fastest. Conversely, Crafts begin at the weakest proficiency level and progress the slowest. Talents, then, are in between the two. Note: Like Abilities, Holy Lands will refer to the corresponding Bonus or Penalty of a Skill as a Proficiency Factor, or PF for short. Like Ability rolls, you modify a Skill roll on a d20 with a your character's PF. Finally, Weapon Skills represent your character's proficiency at wielding different types of weapons. You select Weapon Skills as you would normal Skills, but they increase much differently in a more detailed area of your Character Sheet. This area breaks down each Weapon Skill by the different actions your character can perform while wielding a weapon of that type, and it allows you to increase your character's Weapon Skill proficiencies based mostly on your own preference. |
